USB update tool#

USB update tool may be used for several operations for Fx2030 and Fx3000 substations without display, mouse and keyboard.

Preparing the USB memory#

It is recommended to use USB memory with LED indicator for read/write access.

Download FdxUpdateTool.zip package from Fidelix support site and unzip it to USB memory connected to your PC. USB memory root folder must have folder AutoRun containing files FdxUpdateTool.exe and FdxUpdateToolDLL.dll in it.

Using the tool#

FdxUpdateTool.exe is started in PC from USB memory and function selection window will open.

Use always Windows “Safely remove hardware and eject media” function before removing USB memory from your PC.

Selected function is executed automatically when USB memory is connected to USB1 port of Fx. Executing function will clear selection and next function will be “Read only”

Available functions#

Note

All functions are also doing “Read only” functionality.

Read only#

  • Reads files Debug.txt, Watchdog.txt and Settings.txt to root folder of USB memory.

  • Debug.txt is removed from Fx after reading.

  • Typical duration for this function is 10..15 seconds and USB may then be removed from Fx.

Router reset#

Only for model Fx3000

  • Restores first default settings to router and sends IP settings again to router.

  • Typical duration for this function is 30 seconds and USB may then be removed from Fx.

  • Reprogramming router takes couple of minutes after this and Fx will be off line during that time..

Update Bin folder#

  • Updates new software version to Fx

  • Stops software using StopAll command.

  • Creates backup of /HDisk/Fidelix/Bin to /USBHDisk/BinBackup

  • Copies new version from /USBHDisk/Bin folder to /HDisk/Fidelix/Bin folder

  • Starts software with StartAll command.

  • USB memory must contain new software version in folder Bin.

  • Typical duration for this function is 5 minutes and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

Delete Bin folder#

  • Removes files init.exe and fidelix.exe from /HDisk/Fidelix/Bin folder.

    Fidelix software will not start when Fx is rebooted next time. This function is only needed if Fx is totally crashed and normal Stopll does not work.

  • Typical duration for this function is 30 seconds and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

Change IP settings#

  • Activates new IP settings in Fx from file Settings.txt in USB memory.

  • Current settings musr first be read to file using “Read only” function.

  • Next changes are edited in PC to file using dialog that opens by clicking this button.

  • Finally connect USB memory to Fx again.

  • Typical duration for this function is 60 seconds and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

  • Fx is rebooted once during this function.

Update CE version#

  • Updates Windows CE version CE60_509 to Fx.

  • If selection “No backup” has not been made

    • Stops software using StopAll command.

    • Saves IP settings and activations to USB memory.

    • Creates backup of /HDisk/Fidelix to /USBHDisk/FidelixBackup

    • Deletes everything from Fx and updates new CE version to Fx

    • Restores backup from USB memory

    • Updates new Bin version to Fx if selection “Update Bin also” has been made.

    • Restores IP settings and activations.

  • If selection “No backup” has been made backup is not created or restored.

  • USB memory must contain folder UpdateTool606 folder CE60_509 in it.

  • Typical duration for this function is 10..20 minutes (depending of amount of data in backup) and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

  • Fx is rebooted twice during this function.

Backup to USB#

Added in version 3.01

  • Copies contents of Fidelix folder to USB memory. Name of backup folder contains date/time and name of Fx.

  • Copies IP settings into Settings.txt to USB memory.

  • Software is stopped during backup.

  • Typical duration for this function is 5..10 minutes and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

Note

Due to performance limitations of USB memory the www/symbols folder in backup folder contains files divided into sub folders. “Restore from USB” is able to restore them correctly but if you do restore any other way you must fix Symbols folder first. Program FdxRecoverySymbols.exe is copied to backup folder and it can fix it.

Restore from USB#

Added in version 3.01

  • Restore contents of Fidelix folder from selected backup folder in USB memory.

  • Restore IP settings from Settings.txt in backup folder if option is selected.

  • Software is stopped during restore.

  • Typical duration for this function is 5..10 minutes and USB memory may then be removed from Fx.

Enable web server#

Added in version 3.02

  • Remove firewall restrictions from web server.

  • Invalid firewall configuration may cause browser user interface to become blocked.

  • This function reopens user interface.

Use in production#

Updating several substations is faster with following ways.

  • If “Update Bin folder” is selected and AutoRun folder of USB memory contains file UpdateBinAlways.txt (contents is irrelevant) then selection is not removed after being used.

  • If “Update CE version” is selected and AutoRun folder of USB memory contains file UpdateCEAlways.txt (contents is irrelevant) then selection is not removed after being used.
